If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook (come join the fun!), you may have heard me talking about how much I’ve been craving Mexican food recently. We tend to frequent our favorite local Mexican restaurant with great regularity, but this week it wasn’t in the cards. Or the schedule. Or budget. It just wasn’t.
So, since I couldn’t go out to satisfy my cravings, I would have to satisfy them at home. Done and done.
Normally, I would make this amazing homemade salsa with cherry tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. It hasn’t disappointed in years.
But when my husband mentioned last week that he felt ready to change things up a bit, I realized I agreed. You can have too much of a good thing, I guess.
I grabbed a few ingredients out of my pantry, and whipped up a delicious restaurant-style salsa in less than ten minutes.
Now we have two homemade salsa recipes to keep things spicy.
Restaurant-Style Salsa with Lime & Green Chiles
I use canned tomatoes for this recipe, as well as canned green chiles. Sometimes, it’s just really nice to know you have what you need for delicious salsa ready and waiting on the pantry shelf.
I’ve mentioned this before, but one way I keep things simple in my kitchen is to only buy cans of diced tomatoes– by the case at Costco. I use these cans for marinara sauce, tomato soup, chili, pizza sauce, and now, salsa.
This recipe is super versatile too. Here are a few ideas how you could change it up for your family:
- add a jalapeño for spice (we leave it out for now while the kids are little)
- add cilantro (sorry, I’m genetically predisposed to thinking cilantro tastes like dirt, so you won’t find it in my kitchen)
- use more or less chipotle chili powder to adjust the smokiness
- use more or less lime juice to adjust the tanginess
I use my food processor for this recipe, but if you don’t have one, you could whip up a batch in your blender. Just be careful you do not over-blend it.
Ways to use your delicious, homemade salsa ::
Of course, you can just eat this with chips. I could (and sometimes do) eat a whole batch myself this way. I heart salsa foreva.
But, you can also use leftover salsa a LOT of different ways in your kitchen. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Chicken Salsa Soup in the Instant Pot (or stovetop version)
- Crockpot Mexican Lasagna
- Tortilla Pizzas
- Freezer Burritos
- in an Perfect Easy Frittata

Description
This super delicious restaurant-style salsa takes less than 10 minutes to prepare, is made with pantry ingredients, and can be customized according to your family’s preferences!
Ingredients
- 1/2 sweet yellow onion, cut into large chunks
- 1 4oz can green chiles, undrained
- 2 14.5oz cans organic diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 fresh garlic clove
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/4 tsp chipotle chili powder
- 1/2 lime
Instructions
- Combine the onion, green chiles, 1 can of tomatoes, and the garlic in the bowl of a food processor*. Pulse the food processor until the mixture is chopped into small pieces.
- Open the lid of the food processor, and add the remaining ingredients (the salt, spices, apple cider vinegar, and remaining can of tomatoes). Pulse a few times, until the salsa is your desired consistency.
- Pour the salsa into a bowl and squeeze in half a lime (about 1 tablespoon of juice). Serve immediately, or refrigerate.
Notes
*You could do this in your blender if you don’t have a food processor. Just be careful not to over-blend it.
**You can adjust this salsa however you like! Add a jalepeno to step 1 for a spicier salsa. Add additional chipotle pepper for a smokier salsa. Or add extra lime juice for a tangier salsa.
This is my go-to salsa. I always have the ingredients on-hand. My kids love it, my husband and I can finally agree on it. Thanks Lisa!
