How many posts in a row can I start with telling you how excited I am to share a recipe with you? Apparently I am testing whether or not you notice. Or, I am just genuinely excited and love my job.
Or maybe a little of both.
Either way, I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THESE DINNER ROLLS! Dinner rolls that you can make IN YOUR INSTANT POT!
Okay, caveat. The rolls don’t bake in the Instant Pot. You probably realized this when you saw (a) the perfectly brown and crusty tops on the rolls, and (b) the size of the pan in which they are cooked.
BUT, the Instant Pot plays a HUGE roll role in making these roles rolls.
First, the milk is heated briefly in the Instant Pot. Then the remaining ingredients are added and you simply stir them all together to form a soft dough. There is a small bit of kneading, but it too is in the pot and mainly just consists of folding and squeezing.
If you have never kneading dough before, no problem. Just keeping stirring/pressing the dough together until it is soft and smooth. The whole process takes about ten minutes.
Next, the dough rises in the Instant Pot using the Yogurt setting. It’s the perfect watm environment for the dough to double in size. The Instant Pot speeds up the process and yields fluffy, delicious rolls.
(Don’t have an Instant Pot yet? The DUO and the ULTRA are my favorites. Check out a comparison of the two models here).
Everything Dinner Rolls in the Instant Pot
You do not need any special equipment for this recipe, which is always nice. However, you will want to make sure that you have an instant read thermometer so you can test the temperature of the milk before you add in the yeast. If your milk is too hot, it can kill the yeast, leaving you will very dense rolls. (You don’t want very dense rolls.
I like to use half freshly ground whole wheat flour and half bread flour for these rolls. They turn out BEAUTIFULLY and have an amazing wheat flavor. The bread flour helps the rolls to rise well when using whole wheat flour. However, the rolls would be super soft and delicious with only all-purpose flour if you prefer.
I also make our own everything spice blend because it’s ridiculously easy and a great way to ensure your spices are fresh. But you could use a pre-made blend as well.
I would love to hear if you try these rolls! Come back and leave a comment and a rating, or find me on Facebook or Instagram. I’m very social! 😉

Everything Dinner Rolls in the Instant Pot
- Prep Time: 2 hours
- Cook Time: 15 minutes
- Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
- Yield: 15 rolls 1x
Description
Make soft, delicious dinner rolls with the help of your Instant Pot! These rolls are so good with a homemade everything spice blend!
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 tsp yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 egg, divided
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 1/2 tsp sea salt
- olive oil
- butter for topping
Everything Topping
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp dried minced onions
- 1 tbsp poppy seeds
- 1 tbsp caraway seeds
Instructions
- Combine the yeast and warm water in a liquid measuring cup. Set aside.
- Turn the Instant Pot on to Sauté and immediately add the milk. Heat to 110 degrees. Important: This will only take about 1 minute or less! Turn off the Instant Pot after 1 minute, and take the temperature with an instant read thermometer before adding the yeast. If the milk is too hot it can kill the yeast.
- Add the butter to the warm milk and stir until it is mostly melted. Pour in the honey, then the yeast water into the milk mixture and stir to combine. Add 1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white for brushing on the rolls before baking), and stir.
- Add the whole wheat flour, 2 cups of the bread flour, and the sea salt. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to come together, about 3-5 minutes. Once the dough begin to form a ball, set the spoon aside and mix the dough with your hands, squeezing and folding it until it is smooth and cohesive, about five minutes. Add the remaining cup of bread flour a little at a time as you work the dough. Drizzle a little olive oil on the bottom of the pot, place the dough on the oil, then flip the dough so the top is now oiled.
- Cover the Instant Pot. Turn on the Yogurt setting for 1 hour (the normal setting– not high or low).
- After 1 hour, your dough should have doubled in size. Remove the dough from the Instant Pot and transfer to a cutting board. Divide the dough into 15 portions. Roll each piece into a ball (it does not have to be perfect) and set in a greased 11×9 baking dish.
- Cover the rolls and set in a warm place to rise for 30 minutes. (I like to let the rolls rise on my stove while my oven preheats). Turn your oven on to 425 degrees.
- Stir together the everything topping. Combine the egg white with 1 tablespoon of water. When the rolls have doubled in size (after 30 minutes), brush the rolls with the egg white mixture, then top with the everything blend.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 13-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and brush the tops of the rolls with butter while they are still warm.

These look delicious but am wondering if ingredients could instead be combined in my Kitchen Aid mixer using the dough hook – or better yet, make the dough in a bread machine, then use dough as instructions. Anyone tried either of these methods – how did they turn out?

We didn’t have hamburger rolls so I made these along with her burger recipe. They made the perfect slider buns! My kids don’t usually like rolls with their hot dogs or burgers but both of them ate these with no problem ( I did leave the seasoning off the tops on their side of the pan).

I have the Instant Pot model that does not have a yogurt setting. Is there another option?

When do you add the honey? Did I miss something in the instructions? After I had kneaded the dough and was getting ready to add the olive oil, I looked over and saw my bowls of salt and honey sitting where I had prepped them. Missing the salt was my bad, but I don’t see where to add the honey. Usually, when I make bread the sugar goes in with the water and yeast, but since it wasn’t mentioned specifically, I didn’t this time.
I ended up pulling out my KitchenAid and added the missing ingredients and gave it a few more minutes. It’s currently rising in the IP. Fingers crossed that it turns out.
