Fold up some Italian meat and cheese in a simple pizza dough and you have an amazing meal of homemade stromboli! Just don’t forget the marinara sauce for dipping!
Most of the time when I ask my husband what he wants to eat for lunch, I get vague responses that would make it seem like he has no food preferences whatsoever.
(This is not the case.)
Yesterday, though, I asked and he came through with a suggestion that we use the package of Italian deli meats in our fridge to make strombolis. We had everything we needed and I was more than happy to oblige.
Initially, I just planned to share how to make stromboli on social media so I simply snapped a few photos with my phone. But then I figured I would throw it up here so people can reference it more easily. (Hint, hint. PIN ME! PIN ME!)
These strombolis are basically thanks to Costco— I picked up the Italian meats, deli cheese, fresh mozzarella, and the bag of mixed baby greens from there recently. Just like pizza, though, stromboli is really versatile and you could make yours with whatever you have on hand. Ham, roasted chicken, salami, or even just a mix of veggies with Italian seasoning would all be great additions. As far as cheese goes, if you don’t have fresh mozzarella on hand, (we usually don’t), you could easily use shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, or a different sliced deli cheese.
Any time I mention pizza, or pizza-esque foods, I feel morally obligated to make a PSA about how my life changed when I finally broke down and invested in a baking steel and pizza peel. My pizza game stepped up a hundred notches. Hello perfect crispy brown crust every.single.time.
Of course, if you don’t have a baking steel or stone, a baking sheet will work too. It’s what I used for most of my life. Just please, save yourself the trouble of clean-up and use parchment paper. I count my blessings every time I can just fold up the used parchment paper and put my baking sheet back in the drawer.
One last note, don’t skip the egg wash and sesame seeds. Something about seeing that golden goodness coming out of the oven, peppered with seeds, makes the dining experience all the better.
Easy Homemade Stromboli
I lied. One more final, final, note. Stromboli and marinara sauce is a marriage made in heaven. Thankfully, I have a stash of marinara sauce in my freezer from making a big batch a few weeks ago. Do yourself a favor and make a big batch of marinara to freeze, too. You’ll breathe a sigh of relief every time someone suggests stromboli and you know you already have the perfect dipping sauce made and ready to go.
Want to make stromboli today but you don’t have marinara on hand? No problem. You can use the make-ahead recipe to make a small batch too. Just grab a can of tomatoes and adjust the spices.

Description
Fold up some Italian meat and cheese in a simple pizza dough and you have an amazing meal of homemade stromboli! Just don’t forget the marinara sauce for dipping!
Ingredients
- pizza dough*
- olive oil
- kosher salt & fresh ground pepper
- garlic powder
- dried marjoram
- cheese
- Italian meats
- fresh basil and/or spinach
- egg
- sesame seeds
- marinara sauce for dipping
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 500° (if using a pizza stone or baking steel) or to 450° (if using a baking sheet).
2. Make the pizza dough*. Set aside and loosely cover with a clean kitchen towel.
3. Roll one portion of pizza dough into a 8″x12″ rectangle on a generously floured countertop. Use fingertips greased with butter to push the dough out. Drizzle the top of the dough with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and marjoram.
4. Layer the cheeses, Italian meats, and basil and/or spinach in the center of the dough. (For the stromboli pictured, I layered swiss cheese, prosciutto, capicola ham, salami, fresh mozzarella, mixed greens, and chopped fresh basil).
5. Fold the bottom third of the rectangle up over the filling. (Use a bench scraper to loosen and lift the dough). Fold the top third down. Pinch the seam to seal. Transfer to a piece of parchment paper (either on a pizza peel or baking sheet).
6. Repeat for remaining portions of pizza dough.
7. Brush the tops of the strombolis with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
7. Bake for 10 minutes at 500°, or 12-15 minutes at 450°. Slice and serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
*Thin Crust Pizza Dough
- 1 1/3 C flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp yeast
Mix together 1 C of flour and the salt in a small mixing bowl. Combine the yeast and 1/2 C warm water in a liquid measuring cup. Let the yeast/water mixture stand for a couple of minutes, then pour it into the bowl of flour. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to stir together the wet and dry ingredients. Add the additional 1/3 C of flour and stir/knead until a soft dough forms. Add additional pinches of flour as needed until the dough is no longer sticky.
Double or triple this recipe for the strombolis. One portion of dough will make one stromboli. (If you triple the recipe, divide the dough into three portions after it is kneaded).

Made this yesterday! Couldn’t believe how easy it was. In fact easy enough to put together when unexpected company drops in.
So then I made the two loaves of french bread. Ditto on how easy it was. Loved the crust and the crumb. Superb toasted too.
Bread sticks coming next. Thank you so much for these recipes and for sharing your kids……..lol

Never tried a Stromboli but the instructions seems straight forward. It looks like a pizza but wrapped. I will add extra cheese on mine.
