Stovetop popcorn is a staple at our house– for quick afternoon snacks, lunch additions, and of course, buttery bowls while watching movies at night.
We used to have a joke in our house about how mommy was incapable of making popcorn without burning it. Which meant that popcorn was only available when daddy could make it.
I’m happy to report, though, that this is no longer the case. In August my hubby got on Facebook Live and did a demo sharing the stovetop popcorn method that he’s perfected. Then about a month ago when we were all craving popcorn and daddy was no where to be found, I hunted down that video and followed it step-by-step to make my first perfect pot of popcorn.
Since then, I’ve made dozens of pots of popcorn, including one this past Saturday that I served alongside green smoothies for an easy dinner for the kids before an impromptu date-night-in for the parents.
How to Make Perfect Stovetop Popcorn
Making stovetop popcorn isn’t difficult if you follow the simple steps I will share in the video and recipe below. Once you’ve done it a few times, you’ll be amazed at how easy it really is!
We like to buy rainbow/tricolor popcorn either from Whole Foods or Amazon. I linked both below. Coconut oil is our favorite oil to pop the popcorn in (fun fact: coconut oil is what movie theaters used to use in their popcorn machines), and kerrygold is the BEST butter to top it with. I am a little less liberal with the butter than my hubby, but whether you use butter moderation or not, using the grass-fed gold butter makes a big difference!

Description
We love making stovetop popcorn at our house! It’s so easy once you learn a few tricks. Here’s a simple method to get perfectly popped popcorn!
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 cup popcorn kernels
- 3 tbsp butter, melted
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Heat the coconut oil over slightly above medium heat until it is shimmering and hot, just before it starts to smoke.
- Add the popcorn kernels to the hot oil and spread in an even layer (one kernel deep) on the bottom of the pot. Agitate the pot slightly to coat the kernels with oil. Cover the pot and wait until the kernels start popping. Continue to agitate the pot every 20 to 30 seconds during the process.
- When the popping slows down and you no longer hear regular popping, remove the pot from the heat.
- Toss the popcorn with melted butter and season with salt to taste.
Notes
We also like to add Tony’s Creole Seasoning for “spicy popcorn”. Really, though, the variations are endless!

Here is a salting tip: Add the salt to the oil in the beginning, swirl it around…Then add the kernels….This will cause the salt to more evenly coat each popcorn as compared to adding salt afterwards…
