Ranch dressing has a firm spot as one of the foods that I rarely buy from the store anymore. Unless I am in an extreme pinch, I stick with making my own ranch dressing at home. You will too after you try this recipe.
I searched for a couple of years for a ranch recipe that was both simple enough to make (no fresh herbs please) and also tasty enough to be in regular rotation.
After chopping too much fresh parsley, buying too much buttermilk, and eating ranch that just wasn’t quite IT, I now can say that I have the BEST homemade ranch recipe EVER.
You can make a jar of thick, delicious ranch with pantry staples in just a couple of minutes!
Best EVER Homemade Ranch
We go through a lot of homemade ranch in our home. Not only on salads, but also as dips for carrot sticks (of course), chips, pretzels, roasted carrot fries, onion rings, etc. This ranch is also a must have accompaniment with our favorite black bean and spinach egg rolls. Aaaaand it makes a great pizza sauce too.
Like I said, best.ranch.ever.
I don’t really mind my kids helping themselves to a lot of this ranch because I know exactly what is in it. I make ours with homemade mayo (which you can make in just three minutes) and homemade yogurt (in my Instant Pot), so it’s a little extra yummy and healthy.
Grab the recipe below, check out the video showing you how to make both mayo and ranch, and be sure to pin this post for future reference. This recipe has been on my blog for a while, but is just now getting its own (well-deserved) spotlight!

- 1 C mayonaise
- 1/4 C whey or buttermilk (optional, as needed)

- 3/4 tsp onion powder

Notes
*I do not usually add any extra liquid to my ranch, but occasionally will add whey to thin the dressing a bit for salads. It’s just personal preference here.

I made this a few days ago as a dip, and it was a hit. I made it again today, and my daughter ended up eating the rest with a spoon! I sent her home with another batch along with the recipe. This truly is the best ranch dip I’ve ever made!

Made this a week or so ago, using sour cream instead of yogurt because that’s what we had on hand. It was delicious!

This is our favorite homemade ranch. It’s easy to change the consistency for everyone in the family and the seasoning is just right for my picky eater.

Oh my word, this is EASIEST AND MOST delicious ranch. Seriously, try it. I love that I had most of the ingredients on hand and that it comes together so quickly. The thick consistency is perfect for dipping. I make it weekly at this point and it only gets better as it sits in my fridge…though let’s be honest, it’s gone within a few days, haha.

I have a lot of food allergies in my group of friends, so I substituted coconut milk for the yogurt and I used an avocado oil mayo. The result? DELICIOUS. Seriously. So good. I’m not a huge fan of ranch dressing (I know, I know…) but my friends are so I made a batch for our weekly get-together. Y’all. It’s good. I’ve made a second batch since then and have been putting it on everything. Thank you so much for this recipe!!!
