Several years ago I discovered how easy it is to make brown sugar and powdered sugar at home, and haven’t looked back. Both sugars can be made in less than five minutes, and only buying one type of sugar is another way I’ve been able to simplify my grocery list. I buy a 10lb bag of organic granulated sugar from Costco, store a small amount in a sugar jar in the cabinet, and keep the rest of the sugar in the freezer (mainly to prevent bugs from finding it).
I don’t really use brown sugar or powdered sugar very often, so it makes sense for me to make it in smaller batches as needed. It’s so quick to make, though, that if you wanted to make it in larger batches (hello, holiday baking season), you could and store it in jars in the cabinet.
How to Make Brown Sugar & Powdered Sugar
Homemade Brown Sugar
Mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of molasses in a bowl. Stir with a fork until the molasses is evenly worked into the sugar. You can adjust how light/dark it is by adding more sugar/molasses.
To make a larger batch, use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment.

Homemade Powdered Sugar
Homemade powdered sugar is as easy as blending granulated sugar in a blender! Blend in one to two cup portions at a time so that the sugar can easily move around the container until the sugar is light and airy. (Tip: make sure the blender is completely dry first!)
