Making a version of garlic knots that could be quick and easy and tasty and oh-so-garlicky has been on my list of recipes to try for quite a while. I’m glad I finally did because even though I like to bake for the week on the weekend, and have other quick bread recipes on hand, there was still a garlic knot shaped hole in my life.
I used my simple thin crust pizza dough as the base for these garlic knots, then spruced it up with butter, garlic, and herbs. The garlic knots are also brushed with more butter and fresh garlic before baking. Then more butter when they’re done baking. Seriously, it’s hard to go wrong with butter. Or garlic.
Using my pizza dough as the base means that the garlic knots are quick and easy just like pizza. The difference is that these garlic knots benefit from a thirty minute rise before baking to give them a chance to puff up a bit.
Easy Garlic Knots
Of course, these garlic knots pair perfectly with pasta dishes, but they’d also make an easy lunch addition or an easy bread to serve on the side with dinner.
Here are some of our favorite pasta dishes for inspiration:
- Make-Ahead Meatballs & Marinara
- Easy Skillet Chicken Carbonara
- Fettuccine with Sausage & Blistered Tomatoes
- Garden-Fresh Pasta Primavera
And some of my favorite pizza & bread recommended tools ::
I use each of these tools every week. A dough scraper is so handy for kneading and cutting dough, plus cleaning up afterwards. A garlic press makes quick works of mincing fresh garlic. And a baking steel will transform your homemade pizzas and breads!

Description
Quick and easy garlic knots made with lots of butter, two kinds of garlic, and done in under an hour!
Ingredients
- 2 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp oregano
- 6 tbsp melted butter, divided
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 500 (using a baking steel) or 450 (using a baking sheet).
- Combine the yeast with the warm water in a liquid measuring cup. Let the mixture sit for 2-3 minutes. Stir together the flour, salt, granulated garlic, and oregano in a medium mixing bowl. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small dish.
- Pour the yeast mixture into the mixing bowl, then the melted butter, and stir to form a soft dough. When the dough begins to come together and is no longer sticky, transfer it to a clean counter, sprinkled with a little flour, and knead for a few minutes until a smooth ball of dough is formed.
- Divide the dough into 12 portions. Roll each portion into an eight-inch rope, then tie into a knot, tucking the ends under. Place the knots on a piece of parchment paper to rise 30 minutes. Meanwhile melt another 2 tablespoons of butter and add the minced garlic. Heat the garlic butter over medium-low heat until the mixture is hot and fragrant, 5-10 minutes.
- After the garlic knots have risen 30 minutes, brush the knots with the garlic butter. Bake for 8-10 minutes (on a baking steel) or 12-14 minutes (on a baking pan).
- Melt 2 more tablespoons of butter to brush on the garlic knots when they finish cooking.
- When the garlic knots are cooked through and toasty brown on top, remove them from the oven and immediately brush with additional butter.
- Serve and enjoy. These knots are best fresh, but can be reheated for a day or two later.
I was looking for something quick because most from scratch recipes allow 3 hour total due to dough proofing times. These were great, So easy. Came out beautifully, looked great, smelled great, tasted great. They were so soft, I was surprised. And yes, my 6 year old was ecstatic that she could help!

These were quick to pull together, came out beautifully, and simple enough to let a 1 and 5 year old help! Will make again!

Usually making bread intimidates me but I went for it anyways (and even let the kids help!). These were so easy to make, absolutely delicious and a big hit with the whole family. One question though, what would you recommend for when you want to prep the knots earlier in the day but want them fresh out of the oven for dinner? Refrigerate them and then let rise right before baking? Rise then refrigerate? Clearly I’m new to bread making 😆 thanks!!
